BTEC Technical Diploma in Animal Care

Overview​

This course is a work ready qualification which provides in-depth knowledge and experience of working with and looking after animals. This will enable students to progress to further education, apprenticeships or employment.

How will I learn?

Woodpecker Court consists of an on-site smallholding with a vast range of animals to enable learners to get hands on with a variety of animal species and care requirements.

 

What will I learn?

Practical Animal Health – students develop skills in practical animal health, disease/parasite prevention, cleaning and care, and essential animal grooming techniques for a range of animal species.

 

Introduction to Animal Biology and Health – students gain the knowledge and understanding of animal biology needed for practical animal health and disease management.

 

Animal Care Work Placement – students develop skills and behaviours required for successful working in the animal care sector.

 

Animal Welfare – students study the approaches to animal welfare, including the five animal needs, health and safety, and animal law.

 

Animal Behaviour Assessment and Safe Handling – students develop skills in recognising normal and abnormal behaviours in a range of animal species and apply safe handling and restraint techniques which minimise stress in animals.

 

Feeding, Accommodating and Moving Animals – students study a range of practical skills concerned with the day-to-day care of animals, including feeding, handling and providing appropriate accommodation.

Method of assessment

This course has 33.3% of its content externally assessed through online assessments and task-based scenarios.

 

The other units will be assessed through an assignment for each. These assignments are graded as pass, merit or distinction.

The synoptic assessment for this qualification is based on Unit 6 and takes the form of a practical demonstration of feeding, accommodating and moving animals

Next Steps

​

All of this gives students the confidence to care for farm animals and continue onto further education onto a Level 3 Diploma or employment within the agricultural sector.
